Rome has over 900 churches and most of them are free.
Here is a short list of churches (beyond the obvious) that I recommend to visit when you are in Rome and if you are a lover of beautiful art and amazing architecture.
1. SANTA SABINA — one of the oldest church in Rome, considered to be the best-preserved example of Paleochristian architecture.
2. BASILICA DI SANTO STEFANO ROTONDO — decorated with 34 16th-century graphic frescoes depicting martyrs in all stages of torture.
3. BASILICA DI SANTA CECILIA IN TRASTEVERE — beautiful little church tucked away in a corner of Trastevere with a lovely courtyard and a fountain.
4. BASILICA DI SANTA PRASSEDE — the interior will wow you with the Byzantine-style mosaics and frescoes.
5. SANTA MARIA SOPRA MINERVA — Lavish Gothic church, one of the best hidden gems of Rome with gorgeous frescoes and a Bernini statue.
6. SACRO CUORE DEL SUFFRAGIO — a neo Gothic church with a small museum about souls that, from purgatory, visited family or friends to help them go to heaven.
7. BASILICA DEI SANTI QUATTRO CORONATI — looks like a castle and has a lovely Romanesque courtyard with gorgeous and very well preserved frescoes.
8. SANT’ IGNAZIO DI LOYOLA — you will be amazed by its ceiling and the beautiful sculptures displayed on the walls.
9. SANT’ IVO ALLA SAPIENZA — the most exquisite of Boromini churches with an amazing patio.
10. MAUSOLEO DI SANTA CONSTANZA — fascinating place, a must visit for art lovers.
