One of my favorite photo spots is Piazza del Campidoglio with its wonderful sculptures and masterpieces.
It is the first modern square to be designed in Rome.
The piazza came about because Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, organized a visit to Rome in 1536. Pope Paul III was so dismayed by the state of the sodden Capitoline Hill that he commissioned Michelangelo to design a square.Michelangelo designed the square by orienting it towards St. Peter’s Basilica, which at the time was the political center of the city.
He also took care of the construction of another palace (Palazzo Nuovo) and redesigned Palazzo dei Conservatori, harmonizing both with the Palazzo Senatorio.
In the center an imposing bronze equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius was installed (the original is now located in the Palazzo dei Conservatori).
The statue that we can currently observe in the square is a faithful reproduction of it.
The Piazza del Campidoglio is one of the main tourist attractions in the city, not only for its location, but also because the Capitoline Museums are located there.
On the corner between Palazzo Senatorio and Palazzo Nuovo you can also see the sculpture of the Capitoline Wolf of the legend of Romulus and Remus. And from the back of the square you can have a magnificent view of the Roman Forum. The pictures tells it all.
